Nukus is the capital of Karakalpakistan – the autonomous republic inside Uzbekistan and one of its transport hubs. Today the city is of limited interest to tourists but it is used as base for visits to the Aral Sea and Kunya Urgench (Turkmenistan). Still there is a unique museum here – Igor Savitsky Art Gallery. It possesses one of the finest collections of Soviet avant-garde art from the 1920s-30s. Today the museum holds some 80,000 exhibits ranging from the Khorezmian art of Toprak Kala to Karakalpak cubism.
